5 pairs of pants you can probably let go of

Hi Reader,

As we start heading into fall, it’s time to bring the pants back into rotation. Pants are one of those categories where it’s really easy to hold onto things that don’t actually belong in your wardrobe anymore.

So this week, let’s find 5 pairs to let go of, here are some ideas to help make the decision easier:

  • The pants that don’t fit today. Not the size you used to be. Not the size you’re hoping to be someday. Clothes that don’t fit aren’t actually motivation to reach a certain size. They can be a constant reminder that you’re not there yet. And even if you do eventually reach that size, will you still want to wear those pants? They may just remind you of a time when they didn’t fit. Your wardrobe should fit the body you have right now.
  • The pants that fit…but you don’t feel good in. Maybe they’re uncomfortable, unflattering, or you just never feel like yourself when you wear them. If you consistently choose something else, pay attention to that.
  • The pants you haven’t worn in years because the style changed. Skinny jeans. Bootcut. Wide leg. Low rise. High rise. Trends come and go. My philosophy? Wear what you like. If you love those jeans, wear them! You don’t need permission from the fashion world. But if you’re only keeping them because you’re waiting for that style to come back, ask yourself why. By the time it does, that pair may not even fit the way you want anymore.
  • The “almost right” pants. They’re technically your size, but they’re too long, too short, too tight in one spot, or just don’t sit right. If they’ve needed a trip to the tailor for the last three years and haven’t made it there, they’re probably telling you something.
  • The pants you always skip. You open the closet, see them, and reach for something else. Maybe there’s nothing technically wrong with them. You just don’t want to wear them and that’s enough. You don’t need a dramatic reason to let go of something. If you have better options that you actually enjoy wearing, make room for those instead.

If half your pants don't fit right or you don't wear them anymore, you're not choosing between 20 outfits. You're spending time every morning mentally sorting through 20 options when maybe only 10 are actually available to you.

Simplify your morning by only keeping pants that fit, feel good, and work for the life you’re living right now.

You've got this, happy decluttering!

Hi Reader, It’s officially October, which means pumpkins, cozy blankets, fall candles, and Halloween decorations are probably starting to make their way out of storage. 🍂🎃 But before you put everything back out this year, let’s do a little reality check first. Because here’s the thing about seasonal decorations: just because you stored it last year doesn’t mean you have to put it back out this year. The easiest way to declutter seasonal items is right as you pull them out. Here are some ideas...

Hi Reader, After last week’s adventure in the underwear drawer, I figured we might as well keep going with the small stuff. This week: socks. And if your house is anything like mine, you probably have at least a few socks that have been living a very uncertain life. You know the ones. In our house they've lovingly earned the name, lone bros. One sock with no matching partner, sitting around waiting for the other one to magically reappear. So this week’s challenge is simple: Find 5 socks to...

Hey Reader, Okay, I have a confession to make... well, actually, it’s not my confession. A subscriber recently sent me an email about switching her drawers from summer to winter, and she gave me permission to share part of her story anonymously. She decided to take inventory of her underwear drawer. Thirty-eight pairs. Thirty-eight. And that didn’t even include the ones waiting at the bottom of the laundry basket. But here’s the part that made me laugh: Despite having 38 pairs to choose from,...
