5 more things hiding in your summer stuff

Hi Reader,

Last week, we took a look at our summer clothes and let what we actually wore do the talking. This week, let’s tackle some of the smaller stuff that tends to linger a little longer and often just seems easier to ignore and tuck away for next year: summer accessories. You know, the things that don’t take up much room individually, but somehow there are a lot of them.

See if you can find 5 to let go of, here are some easy things to look for:

🩴The flip-flops you never actually wore. Maybe they’re uncomfortable, they don’t stay on, or you just have other favorites.

👒The beach or sun hat that stayed home all summer. If you reached for a different one every time, you probably don’t need both.

🕶️The sunglasses you keep as a backup. Be honest: are they really a backup, or have you been keeping them because they still could be useful someday?

🛍️The bag that didn’t make it out of the house. Beach bag, tote, crossbody…whatever it is, if you had plenty of opportunities to use it and didn’t, that’s worth noticing.

🩱The swimsuit that’s had its day. Maybe it’s an old favorite that just doesn’t fit the way it used to, a suit that’s stretched out or worn thin, or one you spent the whole summer avoiding. You don’t have to keep a swimsuit just because you used to love it. (Bonus: getting rid of a swimsuit that no longer fits also gets rid of those negative feelings that creep up every time you saw it - you don't need those toxic vibes!)

As you go through these, notice something: What did you actually reach for this summer? Those are the things worth paying attention to. The goal isn’t to have the smallest possible closet. It’s to have a closet filled with things you actually like using.

Five things at a time, we’re getting there.

Happy decluttering!

Hi Reader, It’s officially October, which means pumpkins, cozy blankets, fall candles, and Halloween decorations are probably starting to make their way out of storage. 🍂🎃 But before you put everything back out this year, let’s do a little reality check first. Because here’s the thing about seasonal decorations: just because you stored it last year doesn’t mean you have to put it back out this year. The easiest way to declutter seasonal items is right as you pull them out. Here are some ideas...

Hi Reader, After last week’s adventure in the underwear drawer, I figured we might as well keep going with the small stuff. This week: socks. And if your house is anything like mine, you probably have at least a few socks that have been living a very uncertain life. You know the ones. In our house they've lovingly earned the name, lone bros. One sock with no matching partner, sitting around waiting for the other one to magically reappear. So this week’s challenge is simple: Find 5 socks to...

Hey Reader, Okay, I have a confession to make... well, actually, it’s not my confession. A subscriber recently sent me an email about switching her drawers from summer to winter, and she gave me permission to share part of her story anonymously. She decided to take inventory of her underwear drawer. Thirty-eight pairs. Thirty-eight. And that didn’t even include the ones waiting at the bottom of the laundry basket. But here’s the part that made me laugh: Despite having 38 pairs to choose from,...
